What can happen if a PSU dies?

Someone I know has a LiteOn PSU and I was wondering what would happen if it decided to die one day. IMO I wouldn't think it would be pretty. But what normally happens when a PSU fails? What are the symptoms of a bad PSU?

Cheap Psu's, just say no

All you can do is buy decent Psu's and watch for signs of illness, a good Psu should be reliable for at least three years
