Video Ram 2GB vs 3GB

I am making my first rig and I'm curious if 2 GB video ram is good enough for gaming on max settings for the next 3 years and some blender animation... or if I should go with a 3GB card

  1. Depends on resolution 1080P and below probably fine with 2GB.
  2. What are the GPU chips?

nvidia geforce 600 series and radeon 7000 series, but I read somewhere that nvidia cards are stripped of ability to do rendering stuff

Nah. This generation of nvidia cards are just not as good as certain types of opencl... (such as bitcoin mining, etc) even at 2560x1440 resolution, most games barely go above 1.5 gigs of vram usage and ONLY in triple monitor set-up (3760x1080+) does some games utilize more than 2GB of vram...
  5. You haven't mentioned you monitor resolution, but if it's 1920x1080 or less, you will never even use more than 1GB.
  6. 3GB of VRAM is overkill. Choose 2 GB or less. Unless You have extreme gaming rig thingy with 3 - 4 monitor surround.

I'm planning on using a 1920x1080 monitor, and maybe another very old one, but I think I'll only game with the 1920x1080.

Why are all of these answers specifically gaming? I haven't seen anyone talking about what blender will use... or is rendering more cpu-based?

If you're doing blender stuff with Open CL I'd suggest the 7970/7950. It performs great like 3 times more than the 680/670. This is because the 680/670 is purely for gaming :).
