After my old card died I bought a sapphire HD7770, but all I get is a black screen(monitor never goes out of standby) and several beeps during POST.

The OS would seem to load, though.

The motherboard is quite ancient, it's an Asrock ALiveSATA2-GLAN, but it does have an X16 slot as per card system requirements.

I see in other posts that 3.0 cards on 1.0 PCI express are hit and miss, has anybody tried this particular combination? I can't try the card on another system, so I can't rule out it's a bad unit either.
PSU should be more than adequate.

There is one bios update for the motherboard, though it doesn't mention updates to video support in the notes, so I'd try that as a last resort.
Any other suggestions before I try that?

Thank you.

Did you connect the 6-pin PCI Express power connector to the card?
