I recently completed my first solo build of my own personal computer. My first attempt 1 year ago was horrific due my own in-ability and lack of planning/research. The system was completed by a friend while I watched and asked about 100 questions... That system was as follows... (a most basic description)

2.4Ghz P4 533Mhz FSB
Soyo P4X400 Dragon Lite
1.5 Gig PC2100
MSI GF4 TI 4200-8X AGP 64 Mb
On-board sound W/ Soyo MB (C-Media chip)
80 GB WD 7200 RPM 8Mb Cache
52x 24x 52x Burner BTC
Floppy Drive
350W Power Supply
19" Samsung Flat CRT
Logitech 2.1 Speakers
Cable Modem

The one reason Ive gotten into computer is to play games. Which lead to a interest in the technology. That first system was light years ahead of the old P2 system from Gateway I was using before it.
I wasnt satisfied though... I really wanted to customize and build one solo, just as I wanted it. I was limited on funds that first time as well, so it wasnt all I wanted it to be.
A few weeks ago I had the chance to try again. I had enough money to do all that I thought I wanted and a much better idea of what it would involve. I did a bit of research this time so I was a little more sure of what I was doing. This is what I came up with...

3.2 Ghz P4 800Mhz FSB HT
ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe
2 Gig Corsair XMS DDR400
BFG Nvidia 5900FX 128 Mb 8X AGP
Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS Platinum
x2 120 GB WD 7200 RPM on RAID 0 w/ Intel Chipset
52x 32x 52x On-Lite Burner
16x DVD ASUS
Floppy Drive
480W Thermaltake Power Supply
22" NEC FlatCRT
6.1 Creative Labs Megaworks THX Speakers

The only thing in my mind that needs upgrading is the Video card. Other than that I quite happy. Only regret is that I didnt wait a bit longer before building. Shortly after building it, quite a few of the parts I used went down greatly in cost. Could of used that money for a AMD 64 FX or a "E" class P4.
Anyways how did I do? Like I said this really was my first attempt at it and you people are far more in the know than me. All I know is it runs my games flawlessly and it puts a big ole smile on my face...

P.S. I put really cool red fans in it to along with a top exaust fan thats red neon... Woohoo! Im a dork yes its true :)

Well, you said it yourself. If it runs flawlessly and it puts a big smile on your face, sounds like you've got yourself a decent rig. Everyone will have their opinions on componentry due to everyones experience with certain brands etc etc, but it all comes down to your own personal preference. If it works well and gives you no problems, sounds like you did a fine job.

Curious now, what case did you use? You've gone top of the line parts all along, I'm just interested, that's all.

For future reference, 2 gigs of RAM seems a bit overkill. You could have saved a lot of money with getting 1 gig, or only 512 MB, and probably you wouldn't notice any difference whatsoever while playing games.

Also, did you look into getting a DVD/CD-RW combo drive? My 16x DVD /52x32x52x CDRW Samsung combo drive is one of the best pieces of hardware I've ever purchased, and is even a bit cheaper than buying the two drives seperate. Just food for thought.

Overall though, looks like you did a good job, and if it works and does what you want, that's mostly what matters.

You're a frigging loser dude, that rig is soooo obsolete. Oh man, just thinking you just wasted what is probably half your life saving on that worthless piece of crap.

I mean face it:
NO LCD.. gimme a break man, CRT's are soo incredible nighties..
NO DVD WRITER.. you peanut brain, how do you think you are gonna copy all those cool gay DVD's now ?

But the biggest joke is you actually bought a FLOPPY DRIVE. LMAO ! man, that is sooo noobish. Did you get a tape recorder too ?

here is my advice: throw it out the window, and start over. its useless as it is.

Wow, that's really constructive isn't it? The guy is looking for decent feedback and you slaughter him. Consider this though.

1. CRT's are better for gaming than LCD's, hence the reason he went for a high end CRT.
2. Maybe he doesn't want to copy DVD's?
3. For the sake of a few $$$, why not drop in a floppy drive? Can't hurt.

If you haven't got anything constructive to say, then don't say anything at all.

*SWACK*

Ignore him for the most part, you want a crt instead of lcd if you are a serious gamer.

Adding a dvd burner wouldn't be a bad idea though.

edit: You want a LITE-ON cd-burner too, not an ON-LITE heh

I mean, face it mate, he did f*ck up big time; RED fans ? RED neon ?? Sheesh, its not like there arent pink one's available today. so lets make sure he doesnt do it again. Next time dude, get a Dell. One of those with those nice pink butterfly logo's.

Well dude, It seems this forum requires <i>constructive critisizm</i> I didnt know that, I don't even know how to spell that, but lets try. You havent got a case yet, do you ? well getting this one may solve most of the issues:
<A HREF="http://www.alienrock.com/comaatptoalp.html" target="_new">http://www.alienrock.com/comaatptoalp.html</A>

Then get this keyboard:
<A HREF="http://www.national-tech.com/specs/key-800pin.htm" target="_new">http://www.national-tech.com/specs/key-800pin.htm</A>

Let someone airbrush your CRT in matching colours, and well, maybe if won't be such a disaster anymore. But next time, ask my advice B4 you buy man.

Well.. Thx for the feed back guys (except SpaceDonkey... Somebody musta forgot to pack his lunch that day). A previous poster already addressed spacedonkeys comments as far as a LCD vs CRT, DVD burner, and floppy. CRT are better than LCDs for gaming (not to mention cheaper), would never really use a DVD burner, and a floppy!?! why not its was 5 bucks...(needed it to get the RAID working for a fresh XP install anyway). I agree that 2 Gigs o RAM being a bit much though, probably didnt need that...

And yes I know that if Im happy with it thats all that matters. I was simiply looking for feedback from a tech point of view (like I said im a rookie at this stuff). And I did get some thx to those that took the time.

Someone asked about the case I got. It is a KingWin 436 w/clear left/right/top panels

And finally yes it is Lite-On not On-Lite ( I always freakin do that even when I say it out loud Doh!).
