What would be the smallest flash I could use on a Canon 10D? I don't care
if it is made by Canon or not, as long as it is compatible.

The smallest is actually made by Canon - it is the Canon 220 EX.

Below is a list off all flashes I know about that will work with the
E-TTL system used in Canon's digital cameras (including the 10D):
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Model GN Notes
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Canon 220 EX (22) No tilt/swivel
2. Canon 380 EX (33) No swivel (discontinued 2001)
3 Sunpak PZ40X (40) Rev. eng E-TTL. Also power ratio.
4. Promaster 7500DX (42) Rev. eng E-TTL. Also auto.
5. Canon 420 EX (42) W/l slave.
6. Metz 44 AF-4C (44) Rev. eng E-TTL. Also auto.
7. Quantum Qflash T4d (49) Rev. eng E-TTL. Also power ratio.
8. Sigma 500 DG Super (50) W/l master + slave. Rev. eng.
9. Metz 54 MZ-4C (54) Rev. eng E-TTL. Also auto.
10. Canon 550 EX (55) W/l master + slave
11. Canon 580 EX (58) W/l master + slave
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Models are sorted by maximum guide number (in meters, for ISO 100).
For technical details, see the manufacturers' specification sheets.

Alternatively, for variable power output, you may buy a non E-TTL
«auto» flashgun (like the Vivitar 283, GN 37). This will work fine
on all Canon's digicams. You set up the camera in aperture priority
mode, set the aperture you use on the flash, and let the flashgun
control the exposure.

I have not had any luck using third party Canon dedicated or non
dedicated flashes on either the D60 or 20D, the only way they would
work is with a PC chord. I'd suggest getting the smallest Canon
Speedlight, I think that would be the 200E.

The Sunpak PZ40X AF TTL is the physically smallest flash I've found that is
compatible with the Canon digitals, or so I am told by the local store, the
guy I was talking to got one for his mom and her 10D. The thing is tiny,
2.5"x3.6"x3.5" and 7.2 ounces, has a pretty powerful flash for its size, GN
of 133 at 80mm, 5 power settings, bounce but not tilt, power zoom head that
goes from 24mm-80mm. The biggest drawback is its 10 second recycle time
with fresh alkalines, 8 secs with NiMH.

Then you are misinformed. The Sunpak PZ40X measures 516 cubic
centimeters and weigh 205 grams with batteries. The Canon 220EX
is 374 cubic centimeters and weigh 159 grams. In detail, using
metric measurements:

o Sunpak PZ40X: 63 x 91 x 90 mm; 516 cm^3 - 205 grams - GN 40
o Canon 220EX: 66 x 93 x 61 mm; 374 cm^3 - 159 grams - GN 22

Or rather: bounce/tilt, but not swivel.

It is a lot of flash in a tiny package, no doubt about that, but
it is not the smallest or lightest.

The smallest CF card I ever had was a 2Mb which came with my very first
digital camera, a Mitsubishi DJ1000.
