Optical mouse wont work on new install of xp

Had WinMe but bought XP, formatted and installed XP but
the mouse won't work it's a MS optical mouse. I thought I
could pull up the menu using keys but wasn't able to do
that either. So I had to format and reinstall Me to be
able to come here and post plea for help. But first I
tried installing xp fresh from the format but it said it
won't load in dos, so I installed Me then installed XP.
HELP!!
