Upgrading CPU on PM45

Hi,

I have a 4-5 year old Clevo 571TU laptop with an Intel PM45 Southbridge: 82801IM (ICH9-M) mainboard and an Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 @2.50 GHz CPU.

As the laptop mostly suits my needs, I've been wanting to upgrade it rather than to purchase a new machine.

CPU-Z lists the socket type as P (478).

Would either of the below processors be compatible with my mainboard? The FSBs seem to fit, the Sockets seem to fit... If not what else would I need to check for in upgrading my CPU?

-Intel® Core™2 Extreme Processor X9100
(6M Cache, 3.06 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)

-Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T9900
(6M Cache, 3.06 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)

Thanks in advance for your answers.

better off finding a new machine or keeping it the same. yes it may work but what memory do you currently have ddr2 666-800- or 1066? if its only the lower ddr2 you will need to upgrade the memory in order to see more performance and hey ddr2 is more expensive than ddr3 and still slower. another problem is probably heat and if the stock heatsink will be able to dissipate away a faster processors heat. but its all based on what your mobo will support and most dont upgrade well.

save some cash and keep this and build a decent desktop for cheap or find a decent laptop.

The T9900 should fit. I put the T9800 in my HP DV6 as an upgrade from the T6600. You WILL see a difference in performance with that upgrade, I know I did when I upgraded the CPU on my laptop. As far as cost goes, I am seeing the average price for a T9900 on ebay being about $130, so not that bad for a laptop chip.

Actually I have 8GBs of DDR 3 1066 - the Max supported by the PM45 Chipset.

It's not likely that heat will be of a problem - there were other configurations with Core 2 Extreme processors - this configuration was more suitable for my budget.

I'm not residing in the US, and here a new laptop is quite expensive. The processors I listed were around 150-200 USD on e-bay, while even a decent second hand Clevo here is around 800 USDs. Also I have to travel a lot - so it has to be a laptop.

Yeah, I would go with the T9900, its supposed to be the successor of the extreme you linked. And my laptop is running just fine on a T9800 with no heat problems and its just an HP Pavilion DV6.

Thanks for the replies :) The costs are close and if there's no problem in getting them to work, then I'll go with the T9900.
