My computer keeps shutting down and restarting because of
a device driver problem. I have tried to find the
problem device driver for the past 4 days with no luck.
Can some one tell me what I can do? I have done a clean
install of windows and I still have this problem. I am
running windows xp Pro, with over a gig of ram running on
a 1.3ghz athlon processor. I have over 180 gigs of hard
drive space. I am not running any complet programs, in
fact I can be running windows alone and it still does
it. has anyone got any ideas on how to locate the
problem? I know it is not easy but I have tried just
about everything I can think of. Thanks, Mark

Mark,
Are you sure it is a device driver problem? You may have
a worm or virus. You didn't quote any error messages that
you are getting. Be more specific.

I have scanned for a virus with 4 different programs that
I have such as ez-trust, stinger & spybot s&d. I do not
seem to have one. When my computer does restart there is
a blue screen that comes up but for only 2 milliseconds
and I can not read anything on it. when I do get back
on, xp sends an error report to windows and they the
responce is that it seems to be a device driver problem
but does not know what is actually causing it. SOmetimes
it restarts like every 2 minutes and sometimes I could be
on for hours and it still does not restart. It is very
speratic. But I have been thinking about it and I am
thinking that maybe my memory is going. I have ecc ram
on this and maybe that is where the problem is comming
from. But that i am not sure of. Has anyone had
problems with ecc ram? If you would like more info on
this just ask. I am not sure what else to type about
it. Oh and sometimes my computer is like dead.....I hit
the power button and nothing happens. I have to unplug
it and plug it back in and sometimes that works and
sometimes I have to do it more than once. Maybe my power
supply is bad and that is what could be causing this. I
do not know. Any help or advice is always welcome. I am
learning fast about his stuff. Thanks Mark

You are not alone.. I have the same problem and I am
going crazy. I don't think it is your memory. I have new
memory actually a new PC with P4 3.0 GHZ with Windows XP
prof. The system keep rebooting and I have put in
different memory, different video card and now I am going
back to windows Me to see if this problem stops.

I am interested to find out if anybody else has this
problem.

Thanks

Mark, the way I read your article, it sure seems like your power supply
is going. Process of elemination is the best way to go as far as I'm
concerned or try formating twice & start over from scratch, it's
entierly up to you.
