Hello,

I am wanting to upgrade the CPU's in my PowerEdge 2850 to the Xeon 7041 CPUs. The motherboard is version 4 and states that the CPU's will work. Can I still use my stock heat sinks and VRM's or do I need to upgrade those too?

Thank you

I think the single core Xeons could go up to 3.8GHz in the 2850. But if you upgraded to dual core Xeons, you were restricted to 2.8GHz, so that would be a 7030.

Check to be sure with Dell though, some early Xeon motherboards only supported single core. I think the 2850 is OK though.

Thank you for the information. I see that the 7030's has VT. Do you know if I will be able to take advantage of that technology with the PE2850? I plan on using the server to host VM's. I don't recall if the MB and CPU have to have VT capabilities in order to take advantage of the technology.

That is a good question. I believe it would support it, but I am not 100% sure. The BIOS should have an option to enable it. These chips were out in 2007-2008, and VMs definitely were in use them. As it is a server grade computer and processor, I would expect it to.

Unfortunately, I don't know for sure. At the very least, your upgrade from single core to dual core will give you more cores to dedicate to your VMs. That's always a good thing. In my opinion, more cores is better than VT-x. But it looks like you get both.
