Hi guys, I saw a good deal on ebay for an Athlon II X4 640 £34.99. I have a Athlon II X2 250 at the moment, would it be a noticeable upgrade? As noted in my previous thread if you've seen it, I could wait a while and upgrade to Phenom II X6 1045T or X4 965 later instead. What do you guys think?

The X4 640 doesn't come with a cooler, and I've only got my Athlon II X2 cooler. Would that be an issue? Currently my Athlon runs fairly cool at 25-30C idle and 40-45C on moderate load (80%) playing League of Legends. I have 1x 120mm exhaust fan at the back and 1x 80mm intake side fan with a plastic tunnel directing air into the CPU HSF cooler.

Thanks in advance,
Anthony

I'm guessing it would fit, but you could just pick up an aftermarket cooler for say £20 or so if the worst happens. Also i did a quick google images search and the heatsinks look the same, my money is on your original cooler working, you'll need thermal paste though.

Hm, I see. Thanks for your reply. I have some Akasa 455 thermal paste so that should be fine. I suppose in worse case, I'd look into getting an after market cooler.

Anyways have anyone had any experiences with buying CPU's from ebay? I guessing since its been working, it should be fine as CPU don't tend to break down or slow down over time unless its massively overclocked. That said I'm planning to run at stock speeds anyways.

Most people wouldn't recommend buying second hand cpu's at all, ebay isn't a bad place to shop, just make sure he/she is a respectable seller and pay via paypal it's really the same as buying from amazon

The x4 will be a noticeable upgrade, and as for the x2 cooler on the x4, you should be ok. you will see some more heat, but them Athlon II x4's run cool, even with the crappiest coolers. The x4 640 can take up to 71C before you start to run into problems, it is a 95watt cpu, so its going to run A LOT cooler then them 125watt CPU's. But you have to make sure the board you have will work with the x4 640.
