so.. something is up with my media center pc

E8500, running at 3.16
4gb of ram, dont remember speed
geforce 9400
pushing a 47" 1080 tv
windows 7 64 bit

I upgraded the driver today... trying to see if that would help.
I also cleaned everything up, got rid of all the dust bunnies in
case it was running hot.

I am not playing blue rays disks. I have a large collection of hd digital movies
ripped from blue rays disks. they are stored on a harddrive in this machine
a 7200 something or other. it has 4tb in it. 8 500gb harddrives.

so.. I would think the 9400 could push that tv.
the computer is a few years old. It use to run these movies.
I don't know what has changed. I moved to a new house, set everything up.
and now i cannot play hd movies.

Any ideas as to what i can look for?

I change it out with a gtx250 and the movies play fine.
Still I think a 9400 should be able to play a blue ray movie.

I had the gtx250 in my desktop. I dont really use that computer for anything.
so the 9400 will be fine in it.

nope... plenty of ram, and cpu is around 13%.

9400 was very hot when I took it out. did not monitor actual temp.
I guess the 9400 must be getting ready to die.

The 250 GTS is much faster than the 9400 GT. The 9400 is a $75 video card from five years ago, the 250 is a $150 card from three years ago.

Expecting the 9400 to do anything well is a mistake.

I know it is heck of a lot better card. I think it was closer to $300 when I bought.
That is why I changed them out.

I know the 9400 is crap for gaming, apparently it is crap for movies.

The weird part is it use to work. My question was more about why did it stop working.

It is really not that old of a card, you could buy it at some Walmart's 2 years ago.

There are several to choice from, 7xxx and 8xxx use the same fan...
So, I would say it will be around for a while

My 8400 did a very good job of playing blueray movies.
Most computer users do not need $300 cards. I would be quite
happy with a $25 8800 if I could fined one.

Thanks for the help... not sure why I did not check the fan myself...
I looked at when I took it out and it looked fine.
