ATI's Monitor Controls or the Monitor's ?

It seems to me I should be able to "turn off" the monitors native color controls or should set them to some neutral setting if I am going to use the ATI software's controls to adjust the color or vice versa. Should I, Can I?

I have two Samsung 2233BW's that looked pretty good out of the box, and came with a driver.

I recently bought an Asus VS248 H-P, which is horrible out of the box... the worst looking thing you ever saw... washed out or freakishly vibrant depending on which of the presets you selected.

No driver is available, and no ICC profile that I can find posted anywhere exists... not available to download anyway.

The computer still runs Win XP Pro SP3 fully updated and has a Radeon X1600 with fully updated driver.

After fiddling with the color controls inside the ATI software I have it looking workable for applications... even if it is way off for photos ( not a concern)...

Now that I have it looking workable though I realize all this time I was adjusting the settings via the ATI software... while the monitor stayed in it default presets.

It seems to me I should be able to "turn off" the monitors native color controls or should set them to some neutral setting if I am going to use the ATI controls to adjust the color.

As it is I have Gamma set at .65 where I have read in teh confusing literature that 2.2 seems to be a standard.... I'm no where close....
