Have and old Gateway and the on/off button is not working. There seems to be a small mercury bubble inside a plexiglass stick. This bubble seems to have separated and there for interrupting the connection.(This is my own diagnosis of the problem.) can I just connect the wires, leaving the power on...and just use the plug as the on off switch. the existing wiring going to the old on/off switch shows a black, red and green wire on one side and a blue and white wires on the other. On this forum it states that the black wire is the ground...this seems contrary to normal US wire color codes. Black is always the hot wire. Green is the normal ground color.
Wha It want to know is what wires to connect to make this work. All my old turbo tax records are on this old computer.....Thanks

I don’t know how old it is and whether the cases appearance is of value to you. You could troll amazon looking for a duplicate computer or see if the front bezel is available from Gateway or another vendor, but both are long shots if the computer is over five years old.

Trace the wires back to the motherboard. Short those two posts together with a small flathead screwdriver and the computer will turn on. All the switch does is short the wires.

I'd replace the switch with one you get at Radio shack or another electronic parts provender.
