can a pci 3.0 card work in a pci 2.0 slot. advice please. farmer rick.

Yup - PCI-e is backwards and forwards compatable and a PCI-e 3.0 card suffers no performance loss in a PCI-e 2.0 slot (absolute worst case scenario you lose like 1fps compared to a PCI-e 3.0 slot).
