Do you actually need a GPU for a dual monitor set-up?

I have seen that mobos come with both HDMI and DVI connections, but I have no idea if they work as one connector or if it's possible to get an adapter to connect 2 monitors in dual view.

It depends entirely on the motherboard. Newest z77 motherboards with Intel CPUs support up to 3 monitors.
