Hello, I was planning on building my first rig from gaming sometime this year. This is what I have planned out...

CPU: i5 3570k
GPU: sapphire Radeon HD 7950 3GB
MEMORY: GSkill Sniper Series 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 2133
MOBO: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA1155 Z77 HDMI SATA 6gGB/S USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
HDD: ??? (Something cheap)
CASE: DIYPC Alpha-DB6 black Acrylic ATX bench case

Any suggestions on how to make it better? I don't know if I should get a nVida card, better CPU cooling, or a closed case. I want to spend less than 900 but I'll go above if it makes a big difference. Sorry if this is noobish, I'm new to this.

You might want a better case....and a power supply as well.

Get a case such as the Cooler Master Haf x, and get a quality power supply from a brand like: Corsair, seasonic, or antec. 600watts should do. Also for a hard drive just get a 1tb western digital, or a 1tb seagate. They are pretty affordable nowadays. Also for a cpu cooler you might want to get something like a noctura DH-D14 which should let you overclock it a bit.
