I have a dell ultrasharp u3011. Which as some of you may know has a 2560x1600 resolution, with a 16:10 aspect ratio.

I want to clone this to a 1920X1080 16:9 hdtv.

Unfortunately it forces the dell into 1080p. This is no good at all.

If I extend the displays, it offers a better solution, but still not ideal.
ie, the hdtv tries to go into 16:10 and as a result has black bars on the side of it.

This happens even if I fiddle with the tv's ratio settings.

Is there a work around for this? So I can run both displays cloned, with optimal resolution and aspect ratios?

-Cheers.

You can clone only the same resolution as you have on your primary display. So with cloning enabled your dell will be forced to 1080p (to match max. res. of TV).

With extended desktop however, you should be able to tune resolutions of both displays independently, meaning that resolution on both displays should be optimal - 2560x1600 for dell and 1080p for TV.

Right click on desktop and choose screen resolution. Click on second display (TV) and change its resolution to 1920x1080.
