GT 610 is strictly entry-level, as in can run Windows 7 applications in 1080p no hitch, really that's it (unless Minecraft on medium settings counts), the GTX 550Ti is much better as it can run BF3 smooth at 1080p low detail quality. GTX 550Ti http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uebyHH-dHy0 (just one example). Only the GTX 550Ti supports 3D vision (nVidia spec).
Even nVidia says so: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt...

Please state the PURPOSE of such a card.

Are there specific games you wish to play?
Are you doing any photo or video editing?

What do you mean by "3D" exactly?

The best value in all cases is probably one of the HD6000 series, depending on your exact need.

My dad isn't a gamer and I simply got him an HD6450 1GB, fanless card for $30 which performs just as well as a $500 card because he doesn't game and wouldn't need those features (actually better because it's silent.)

I'm willing to bet he means nVidia 3D vision, which would rule out Radeon cards. I totaly agree with that the value on the Radeon HD 6000-series cards is where to go.
But do they support AMD HD3D? Because that there could be his solution.
