I am still looking and researching vid cards and thought I'd ask about this set. My budget is under 150 and I can find these for around that. The 1st is a 6870 card with 1 gig of ram. The buss speed is around 800 but its 256 bit. The second is the newer 7770 card. It has the faster gpu at 1 gig with one gig of ram but its 128 bit. Which would be better for gaming and general computing? Unless I get a great deal on a HD screen, I am more interested in speed and frame rate. I'd also like to xfire the card later on when I get more cash.

ASUS M5A97 with AMD FX 6100 at 3.3 gig, 8 megs cache
8 gig Ram
650 watt PSU
Basic monitor 1600 by 900 res.
Win 7 Ultimate

The radeon 6870 is faster than the 7770 by a little bit. The 7770 is on par with the 6850, a step down from the 6870.

Go for the 6870 over the 7770 if you have the budget.

Also, get an i3 rather than an FX 6100. i3's have less cores but are still way faster, especially in gaming.

I don't think that the processor type was the question of concern.

And for the record my FX-6100 at 4.784Gz performs as well as and a bit better than a I5-2500 with just a 6870.

I don't think an i3 can even old a stick to it.

Just make sure that you have adequate cooling should you decide to try and overclock that high.
I am using a Cosair H100 cooler and my temps hold right at 69degrees under a heavy load and is 100% Prime95 stable all day long.

If you do want Intel performance go with the I5 or I7 series as they are competitively priced compared to AMD's finest but still cost more.

FWIW

I don't have an issue with the CPU. Surfing the web or running stand alone programs, its fast as hell. Any slowness comes from running a standard Seagate 7200 HDD but I can't afford a SSD now. Its the vid card. I just had a new system built and I did enough research to get it this far with a limited budget. I am adding a sound-blaster because on board audio sucks. I will also add 8 gigs more before Xmas. I had to use the ATI Radeon 2600 pro from the old build. I just have problems gaming. I play Call o Duty UO and some servers work fine while others are very choppy. I hope its an issue with such an old card on a new board. My old build was an ASUS SLI Mobo with AMD Athlon single core at 2.2 gig, 1 gig ram, 450 watt PSU and Win XP SP3. The mobo capacitors starting popping. Any help with the COD issue would be appreciated.

The 6870 is a better card, But it also uses more power.
I have a XFX6870 DD at 900Mhz and it uses something like 150 watts.

I was looking at the 7770 and 7750 as well but I got a sweet deal on the XFX6870 for $130.
So, I went for it instead especially since it was a more powerful card for $10 or $20 more.

You have plenty of power to run that card on a 650 watt power supply.

I once got a ATI Radeon 2600 and could never get it to run right so I took it back.

If you mean make, its a Dialotec. Since I hade the system put together, I have heard that these are crap compared to other brands. That's what I get for researching the mobo and cpu, but just ordering a psu based on watts alone. A friend has the exact same unit in a larger system than mine for 2 years, so I hope it will hold out till I can get a similar size Corsair or thermaltake around xmas.

So you had problems too. the 2600 had odd issues since I got it back in 2007 However it work enough for me to keep. I am glad to hear that others have had similar problems and it gives me hope that once replaced, the issues I have now will be gone.

That was about when I got my 2600 and I couldn't get the right driver installed and when I thought I did, it would work for a minute and then just bog down to almost nothing.
I had an AGP version so there were issues with the drivers.

I took it back to Best Buy were I got it and ordered an EVGA Superclocked 7600GT and that worked great for what I was doing.
I am still using that same card and opty185 to this very day for web and audio stuff.
ATI was in sad shape then but now they are doing great.
I use the FX-6100 for more productive work as I don't have any games for it......Yet!!
