Drive Image Probs!

HELP!!

Need a quick fix for this one.

I'm using Drive Image 4.0 and I can't get the program to back-up drive imaged to CD.

I've tried CD-Rs and CD-RWs with the same result. I've made sure that "emm386" is not loaded. I have run scandisk and defrag just before running this. The CDs are not formatted.

At about 75% of copying, I get a "write error 1805" box. Every time!

Error checking on.
Image verifying on etc.
Compression has been at high or low, but never none because the image is 1.02 GB.

Any suggestions?

P.S.

Many thanks.

What CD-Burner are you using?

Here's the solution page from PowerQuest...it's especially bad because they say, and I quote, "...and only use CD-R media. Also, create the image file without any compression." But, read it though.

Hmmm. No compression seems a waste. First I'd prefer to use RWs and keep the disk numbers down. Second, as its only an image of my bare bones C: (hardware, OS, AV stuff etc) and its 1.02GB I'd like to get it on one disk.

I may have a fix, that a pal suggested, so I'll keep trying. Again, many thanks.

I was just rereading your original post, and I was wondering if you used the bootable disks that you could make with the installation CD. Did you?

Plus, maybe your CD is using PIO mode, and it should be in UDMA mode. Check that out...

That's all I can think of right now.

My System Rig

I've tried boot disks and HDD re-boot. Apparently the boot disk method omits the emm386 line from the config.sys file. I even tried the HDD re-boot and edited my config.sys beforehand.

I'm pretty sure both my CD-drives are running UDMA33. They are both Master on channels 1 & 2 and were detected as such. If I don't reply on that one, everything is cool.

I'm asssuming after reading through your posts several times that you are not just having a problem copying an image to a CD ... but with creating any kind of image in the first place, whether backing up to the hard drive, or to CD. Would that be correct?

You mentioned having two optical devices jumpered as Master's ... does that mean the hard drives are both slaves? Are you using some kind of PCI IDE controller card?

LoL. You guys really try! Its appreciated, believe me.

2 x 40GB 60GXP RAID 0 on the HPT370 controller (IDE 3).

CD-ROM on IDE 1, CD-RW on IDE 2.
No DMA enabled in device manager. Should I do this? I care less about speed issues and more about the thing simply working.

Hmmm. This one is a beaut. I'll repeat the processes.

Whether on CD-RW or CD-R, using the HDD or FDD method (config.sys edited for emm386) the process goes ahead well, but at 75% (or thereabout) it stops and throws up a box "write error 1805". Annoying it is. Dejected I am. Yoda I ain't, so the force is obviously not with me on this one.

You're darn tootin' we try! LOL!

A couple of things come to mind:

1.) Update the drivers and the BIOS for the Highpoint controller.

http://www.highpoint-tech.com/370drivers_down.htm

2.) Try to find the DOS drivers for the controller from the mainboard manufacturer and add them to the boot floppy.

If that doesnt work, you might consider adding an additional drive and attach it directly to a mainboard IDE channel, and use this for storage. Considering that you are running RAID 0, this wouldn't be a bad idea in any case, just for redundancy. You could boot from it, if necessary, and then use it to store a current image, as well as other personal/infrequently accessed files that don't require a great deal of access speed.

Personally, I can't recommend running RAID 0 ... if a drive fails, all your data is lost. If it was my system, I'd have four drives, three on the array, and one regular IDE for a backup. I'd set the array as RAID 0 + 1.

You should be able to choose the UDMA settings for the drives in the BIOS of the controller card, by hitting Control + H when the HPT370 BIOS text is first displayed during the boot process.

Hmmm. I have a spare 40GB 60GXP which I was keeping for a seconadary system. Maybe I'll simply save the image to another partition on my RAID array.

I can get a Fujitsu MPG3204ATE 20GB (UDMA100, 5400rpm, 512k) for about £75.00, but I have a very silent system. Also, I have my HDDs mounted in the 5.25 bays inside silent drive enclosures. So is this drive hot or noisy?

Ouch...I'm out of the loop. Once you all started with RAID, I became stoopid.

Sounds like a good idea to me. The image will be fairly small ... you'll probably never really miss the space.

Sorry ... I've got no personal experience with that Fujitsu hard drive. Anyone else got a comment for camie on that drive's particular's?

Yep. I'll go with creating a partition for backups. With compression enabled on images, I should get away with allocating a 3GB partition. That should be enough for the important stuff.

Cheers everyone!

RAID can make anyone feel stoopid. The very minute IDE RAID came out and hit desktop systems, I began stocking up on aspirin. I think I had better check the medicine chest ... I may be out, and we can't have that!

Just a thought, have you tried using msbackup, saving the file to a folder on the hardrive and then burn this to a disk?

Another Cookie? Who is going to pay my dentist bill?

w00t! w00t! w00t!

I copied an image to another partiton. Took about 5 mins.

I was going to do a drag n' drop to a CD, but the image is about 680MB (720,???,???), which is a bit big for CDs. Max compression used too. Maybe that was the problem. Maybe the program wouldn't allow spanning an image for some reason.

I'll have to try smaller images to find out.

Maybe you are tryin' to write to much to a disc, but wtf would I know!

Plese consider.lol. Could it be that simple!

The thing is, I thought it would come up with the message

"The disk is now full, please insert another"

or something to that effect.

Maybe it is just that simple. LoL

Perhaps you could overburn the disk, and then verify the image?

The concluding installment of this exciting saga...

Ifinally worked out how my system had so much data on a clean install of all necessary software. My soundcard extras came to about 300MB of space.

At last I got under 700MB. Copied an image to another partition, then formatted a CD-R and drag n' drop. Verified as valid image.

I've yet to actually try it, but I'm pretty sure it'll be fine.

Thx to all for help.

There's something to be said for a "custom" installation of all that software, huh? LOL!

I never install anything "default". It just makes a big mess, and forces me to go back and turn off a dozen useless TSR's. Not mention making the installation even more bloated; and MS operating systems have enough problems with that kind of thing without additional "help" from third-party companies.

I'm very glad to see that you managed to get a workable image on a disk, although I never did understand why you just didn't make two disks, instead of insisting on just the one. Isn't that why God made rubber bands and jewel cases?

See ya ...

Rubber bands tend to perish. I'd much rather spend endless hours trying to solve a problem and find several other problems along the way (((banging head on keyboard))).
