Bottlenecking gtx480 sli....

Hi,

Ok, im on a tight budget at the moment. I have 2x gtx480 in sli and an amd phenom II x4 965 @ 4.1GHz on air. As you may have guessed....the cpu is bottlenecking the gpu`s. Ok i don`t have enough money to buy new mobo+cpu. So i thought i'd just heavily oc my cpu. Before doing so, i need water cooling which i could get from my friend for free. How much of an overclock do i need to achieve so that my cpu wont bottleneck the gpu`s and is it worth it? Would I hit a wall before even achieving my goal?

I couldnt find benchmarks of an ocd AMD PII 965 to compare with other cpu that dont bottleneck a gtx480 sli config.

Thanks for you time

More about bottlenecking gtx480
  1. why you think that your cpu is bottlenecking your gpus? your cpu is fine for gaming espesially at 4.1ghz.
  2. You can test whether that's actually what's happening by running a game and seeing what kind of load percentage you get on the GPUs. If it's significantly lower than 100, you're bottlenecking, though you should check the CPU core load too if that's the case.

With water cooling you should hit 4.5 ghz.

Honestly you need to buy a new cpu, my Amd Phenom II x4 980 @ 4.2 Ghz bottlenecked my single gtx 670.

After switching to a i5 3570k i noticed that the minimum frame rate was much higher than before.

i ran batman arkham city benchmark along with unigine heaven benchmark with 3.8ghz and got lower mark then when at 4.1ghz.
Also during gameplay, gpu load range from 50-80% never exceeding 85%/90% .

you had a bottleneck @ 4.2ghz with single gtx670!? why does amd suck so bad...
  6. Well, the 670 is four years newer than the 965. That's a tech eternity.

true but the 480 is 1 year ahead of the 965...and at that time, the 965 was the top of line quad core from amd. Also a bloomfield i7 could surely handle a 670 despite the fact that the i7 is also 4years older than the 670

I only had a bottleneck in cpu limited games like bf3. The Phenoms architecture wasn't good enough for some of today's games!
