I finally downloaded Nikon View and just started playing with RAW images.
All I can say is WOW!
I also found out I need a new computer to handle the larger image files.
I'm too old to wait for these RAW files to download, process and save. An
8MB JPEG file? Yikes!

All I have is Photoshop LE, so I have no way of seeing the RAW images
without the Nikon software. Eventually I'll get the latest version of
Photoshop, but I'm pretty amazed at what I can do now with the limited
resources I've got. I can punch things up a bit with Nikon View, then go
into LE and tweak it even more. Up to today I was limited to only shooting
JPEG images never realizing what the difference was between shooting jpg and
raw..

Did you install the sotware from the CD you should have got with the camera?
There's a photoshop filter in there somewhere, something.8bf or maybe .9bf,
can't remember exactly now. You copy that into your photoshop directory, under
'automation' I think...
I can't remember the exact details, I'll take a look at my home system if you
like.
If you then right click a NEF file, and select open with photoshop, the
converter fires up, offering you exposure compensation and white balance
adjustments.

I'm on W98se, so the directory I'm looking at is C:\Program
Files\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats and the specific files are
"Nikon NEF plugin_5x.8Bi" and "Nikon YCC TIFF_5x.8Bl".

The "Excellent Quality" choice in the Nikon Editor that comes with NV and
the Nikon Capture Editor that comes with Capture appears to use less
compression than the Fine mode in the camera. For quality/size similar to
Fine use the next selection down, "Good Quality."

16 bit/col scans of 35mm at 5400 dpi ---> 240 Mb TIF. (about 15-20% of that is
'useless' but that is how it's stored). A DVD burner is a neccesity.

This "hobby" is getting out of hand. I used to do this for a living, so I
better make a few bucks at this just to offset the extra computer hardware
and software. <BG>

I do have an Open with Photoshop option. Just didn't try it -- yet.
