First Build, Power Issue?

Hey guys! A couple weeks ago I decided to build a computer since I had it on my mind for awhile. So I'm no noob to this, but I have never done it before. I ordered all the parts, and just today, the last part came (the motherboard). I just finished building the entire thing, and for some odd reason, when I plugged in the Power Supply, the entire system got power. That means LEDS, Fans, everything. But I checked the Power LED on my case. It was off, and there was nothing being displayed on my monitor, as if the computer was off. So I then pressed the power button on the case. The LED came on, and it booted and I got into the Bios just fine. Everything looked just fine. I thought what happened in the beginning was nothing, but then I turned off the computer by holding the power button. Nothing was being displayed on the monitor, the Power LED was off, and guess what? The system still had power as it did before. The only way I was able to shut it off was by using the switch on the PSU. When I turn it off with the PSU, it no longer turns back on when I turn it on on the PSU. I unplugged it a few times, moved outlets, and then it turned back on, only to have the same problem as before.

I want to know if this is a connection failure, or a defect in the Power supply, or something else?

  1. That might be a connection failure or a power supply failure. I don't know if it can be anything else. You could try troubleshooting by seeing if it happens with different cables plugged in or seeing if the motherboard has some cables/jumpers connected incorrectly (hey, it happens).

    If you have any other power supplies that can handle your system, you could try testing with it or them.
  2. If it is a connection failure, what could it possibly be? All i have connected is a cpu fan, 3 sys fans, the gpu, and a solid state drive. I can still get this computer to BIOS. I just cannot shut it off properly. I also noticed something else. When it is supposed to be off but has power, the MOBO LEDS show that my cpu is in Phase 2 power mode. But when I press the power button, it switches to phase 8. Another thing to note is that my PSU came with an 8 pin, 20+4 pin, and a 4 pin connector, while my mobo needed a 24, 8, and 6 pin. So i plugged them i, and could not use the 4 pin, so I used the PCI 6 pin on the motherboard 6 pin power connector since I had nothing else. I also do not have any other power supply because I did not expect it to happen. My friends tell me it cant be a fault PSU because it is emitting power and still works, and its just not communicating with the Motherboard in the right way.
  3. Your friends aren't really correct. This most certainly can be caused by a faulty PSU. For example, it might have a minor short circuit. Your motherboard and/or case might be having an issue if the case is connecting two or more points on the motherboard that are involved with power delivery (some cases have been known to have metal extrusions that touch contacts on some motherboards and cause havoc as a result). The motherboard itself might be faulty. A lot of things could be the cause.

    You could try unplugging unnecessary cables. The CPU power is delivered by one of two connectors, either a four pin or an eight pin connector. Your mobo and your PSU have the eight pin version, so ignore the four and six pin connectors on the motherboard. The 20/24 pin connectors power the motherboard itself as well as many components that are connected to it (mostly excluding the CPU). I'd recommend unplugging that six pin connector from the motherboard and seeing if it does anything.
  4. I unplugged the 6 pin connector from the mother leaving only my 3 system fans, CPU fan, MOBO , and GTX 670and SSD powered, still with the same results. CPU in phase 2 power mode when it should be off, and only turns off with PSU switch. Here is the last thing I should mention. My Motherboard uses a 24 PIN as the main power connector, but my PSU uses a 20+4. Could that have anything to do with it? If nothing works, I will try to RMA the PSU, as I only ordered it a week ago. I also thought that it could be a defected motherboard, but that doesnt seem right since I can still get into the BIOS and everything when I use the case power button.
  5. 20+4 does not cause such problems at all. 20+4 is simply a connector designed to not have problems with both 20 pin slots and 24 pin slots.

    It's possible that the PSU and/or motherboard or faulty. You don't need to have a complete hardware failure to have a faulty unit. For example, many video cards, instead of outright failing, simply under-perform where they should due to hardware failure. They still need to be replaced, but they kinda function so long as you don't try gaming on them.
  6. So what do you suggest I try? It's obvious that I have to reutrn SOMETHING. I have a 3 year warranty on my GPU, Motherboard, and PSU. I still dont know how to tell which one is faulty. Don't want to look stupid trying to reuturn something that is just fine.
  7. Last bit o imformation. I narrowed it ddown to the best I possibly could. Nothing is connected except the RAM, CPU FAN,, and the 20+4 and 8 pin connectors. Nothing else is plugged in, an it is still recieving power when the PSU swwich is flipped on.
  8. Do you have no other PSUs that you could try testing in this system?
  9. Nope. I have a 300W power supply in this desktop, but I'd prefer not doing anything to it since it was a desktop from a store, and I am not the only one who uses it.

  11. It's fine. I sent a ticket into OCZ support hoping to get some information. A specialist is in the process of helping me. The first thing he asked me was if the PSU fan was spinning while connected to nothing in the system, which it is. Guess I'll just have to put my faith in thsi guy.
