Use Standard ATX Power Supply in Dell Optiplex 960 Mini Tower?

Hi everyone, I posted this in the power supply section but got no response.

I'm just curious if I can replace the current 255W PSU in my Dell Optiplex 960 Mini Tower with a regular ATX power supply from NewEgg. I want to make a "FrankenRig" by installing a better power supply (~450W-500W) and about a GTX 560 or so for some better gaming performance.

IF I were to go with a 650 instead of the 560, would I even need to upgrade the PSU? I won't be overclocking the CPU at all, and the only other upgrade I am thinking of doing is adding a Samsung 830 128 GB SSD.

The NewEgg PSU calculator says that if I run a 7750, I'll only need a 270 W PSU. The Dell website says that my PSU is ~80% efficient. Will I be okay if I just go with the 7750? I forgot that the Radeons tend to be more energy efficient when I wrote the first two posts.

Yes, a standard PSU will work in your system.

However, your Dell PSU will handle just about any GPU that does not require an external power connector. Going with a Nvidia 560 or 650 would require a PSU upgrade.

Going with the HD7750, you would be able to get by with your existing PSU.

BTW, the HD7750 is a decent gaming performer for an entry level GPU. Stick with medium game settings and it will do well.

Thank you for the replies. I'm very seriously considering sticking with the PSU and the HD 7750. Especially since my CPU is an E8400. I'm concerned that much more than the HD 7750 would be bottle-necked.

My native resolution, however, is 1920 x 1200. Would I be able to run most games on medium setting at that resolution with the 7750?

The HD7750 will be fine, for most games, at low to medium settings at 1920x1200.

For more than that, you should consider saving your money toward a new rig altogether.
