Dead GTX 460?

I bought a Gtx 460 today, and the guy said it was working. He said he ran it on ONE 6+2 pin PCIE plug.

I tried running it on one 6 PIN (I have to order a molex -> pcie) and the fan would spin, but no display.

Is the card broken? Or will the fan just spin when it has any power?

Do I NEED 2 6 pins?

They say some of these cards will run on 1 6 pin, but I tried, got the fan spinning, but no display.

Is it normal for a card with 1 6 pin instead of two to have the fan spinning and no display?

My EVGA 256bit GTX 460 needs 2 6 pin for it to work. I dont see why yours could only run off of 1. Try using both before you determine the card is dead.

A 460 definitely needs 2. Mine has 2 as well, and I didn't know one existed.

Lost the modular extra pcie cable, is it normal for the fan to spin, but no video with one pcie plug?

I've never tried connecting only one to either of my cards I have in SLI - whats the point, they have 2 connectors for a reason!

Wise words, the original owner had it running off of one 6+2 pcie plug somehow.

The right pcie plug has dust on it.. (indicating no use.)

And what power supply do you have now? You definitely need 2, but chances are that if yours only has 1, it might not run.

LSP Ultra 450w, it has 24A on the 12v rail, so I know itl be good.

24A on the 12V? It's pushing the limit, but it should run on that power supply just fine. Run it on the 2 connectors though.

Ultra PSU's are known to be rock solid, so I hope it will put up


The power supply the guy ran had 3 +12v rails, at 32A, so maybe it had enough power on one 6+2 pin to power his card?

The fact that the fan spins but nothing shows up typically relates to a lack of power.

Happened with me - my PSU wouldnt push out enough juice for the GPU to run. Popped in a new PSU and pow!

Also - two six pins for sure! Never heard of one that runs off one..

A stock gtx 460 draws 160w full load and that is around 13 amps. Keep in mind most units don't provide their rated output for sustained periods of time so you need a new psu.

I heard 300w full load, but I'm sure 24A is plenty to run just one GTX 460.
