Hi all,

Im looking buying a new gaming Pc, my budget is about £400, i have looked at a few websites and theres three Pc's i like the look of but i dont know which one is best for games, im looking at playing stuff like Cities in Motion, CoD black ops and crysis 2. (not at max settings obviously)

These are the three i liked:

http://www.ukgamingcomputers.co.uk/eros-athlon-ii-gamin...

What do you think?

cheers.

I'd not be inclined to go for the Eros Athlon II build, as it has too small an amount of RAM when compared to the other 2 builds. Neither machine has Windows, not sure if this is an issue for you or not. I'd personally lean towards the Capella GT4 as it has slightly better specs. The CPU is slower, but it's still reasonably quick and is dual-core. At a budget, I don't see the point in getting an X4.

I was thinking that maybe an x4 processor would give me some future proofing maybe, also, which is more powerful, a gt430 or a hd5670? Windows isnt an issue really, I have a copy spare.

In theory, the HD5670, but that’s only from comparing the specs. Real-world application will vary, so do some Googling to see what’s what and how it applies to your usage.

It’s a good question on the dual-core v quad-core. The Phenom II X4 might be easier to overclock, I think, which may make it more future-proof than the X2. The turn-off for me with that system is the lower spec for the motherboard and the unbranded PSU (from the description, anyway).

Either way, whichever system you get you’ll be making a compromise. Have you also looked at taking he £400 and going to a website like Scan and pricing up your own build? eBay would be a good bet too…you could get some older chips second-hand for a very good price.

You would have better results posting in the dedicated build forums than in the general discussions thread.
May 16, 2011 3:49:29 PM

Im from the uk and all the other forums seem to be talking about us builds and $ prices so I posted here in the uk bit
May 20, 2011 10:04:47 AM

That unfortunately is because there are more of them than there are of us. It's always been a problem with the reviews too as the price points for products move with local tax. However the ranges remain the same and a quick google will give you an indication of local price.

It's not going to blow anything up but you will get better tech advice in the bits of the forums those types of people hang out in (I live in Linux land most of the time) as only people logging into the UK site see this section. Why not call on a couple of hundred thousand people who also have experience?

I wanted to upgrade to new parts, the core two quads and ddr2 are last generation.i wanted to get something newer like ddr3 and a core I series cpu or am3 amd.
May 20, 2011 4:49:57 PM

Plus I didn't really want to have to build it, id rather get one delivered pre built.
May 20, 2011 4:56:54 PM

Ok then i went on Aria net and bought all these components for a self build again much better than anything you can get pre built

As you can see this would give you a much more powerfull gaming system, but its your choice, you really suffer if you want someone else to build it for you.
May 20, 2011 5:17:48 PM

I know but thats over my budget, I can see what your saying with the self build but I'd be happier with someone else doing it and getting the warranty.
May 20, 2011 5:26:14 PM

Well its only £35 over, im sure you could save that in a month, also dont forget you get a warranty on all the parts you buy new.
May 20, 2011 5:30:16 PM

The aria pc looks ok but I dint really want to go over budget when I can get a quad core pc for £370 from one I said above ad I've read the 5670 is meant to be a damn good mid range card
May 20, 2011 5:36:22 PM

Its your choice buddy, but remember a good PC is the total sum of all its parts, not just 1 or 2.
May 20, 2011 5:40:13 PM

I didn't think the parts listed were bad, are they?
May 20, 2011 9:35:45 PM

PSU is very suspect which is probably the most important part of any PC build, Motherboard is also not a good one for future proofing. Case, likewise.

All parts of a PC are covered by warranty, whether you assemble it or not.
May 21, 2011 10:32:36 AM

@ Diellur, i dont think we can convince him to do the self build buddy, regardless of the obvious benefits, but still we tried to show him, a bit like life reallly, you can only show someone the right door to walk through, you can even open the door for them, but in the end there the one who must take the steps to walk through it, sigh!

Thanks but the motherboard is only am2+ and I can get almost the same pc from one of the above for less money with a quad core, I appreciate everyone telling me to build my own and I have built my own in the past, I just felt like buying a pre built one this time, I dont really get time to build them these days.

No problem, sorry if I did not make this clear, AM2+ is the same as AM3, our systems are fully built and tested for 24 hrs before we ship, we can usually get these chips to at least 3.5ghz on stock cooling and some unlock to quads.
May 21, 2011 11:51:02 AM

Am2 is not the same as am3, and unlocking to quad core invalidates warranty.
May 21, 2011 12:06:07 PM

Almost correct, AM 2 is indeed not the same as AM3, but as far as RAM and CPU support, AM2 + is, AM2+ just allows the support of older CPU's and DDR2 and DDR3, the board I quoted you supports 2 sticks of each making it an excellent upgrader's board.

As far was warranty goes it's irrelevant as 1) I have never had a CPU fail in 10 years regardless of OC-ing and unlocking, and 2) the manufacturers just send you another one anyway, they really don't care. Biggest problem with CPU's is physically damaging it during build.

Anyway, I hope you get the system you want, just watch the case/PSU on the cheaper deals as you really do not want a cheap PSU as they really can cause problems, most other stuff is really very, very reliable these days.
May 21, 2011 12:12:00 PM

Thanks for the reply, I know theres a difference in ht speeds with am2+ and am3, plus the pin configuration, you can bet that the next gen of processors will be am3 and am3+ backwards compatible but not am2+.i just think about upgrade ability alot and as for the parts, they must be certified and if they do go on me I just get them replaced fire free without having to do my own fault finding or have to hassle about removing parts to send back.id just send the whole thing back
