Although the Gigabyte can provide performance close to the 7950, a 7950 is still the way to go. Why? Because of the extra stream cores, something you can't add in the 7870.

The HD 7950 is a much better choice, add a little bit of OCing to it and it'll scream.

+1 to fpoon. The 7950 has more stream processors and can also be overclocked. It's going to offer more performance at stock vs the 7870 overclocked. Don't forget that the 7950 can be overclocked as well! An overclocked 7950 performs about the same as a stock 7970. There is an $80 price difference though.

Actually you can find HD 7950's for $299 pretty easy. Heck $279 after rebate.
