Hi all,

If my MB supports 2GB of ram, then how many sticks can i put in?

I only have 2 slots and both are being used with 128 in each.

I don't know how many 128's equal 2GB's.

Thankyou so much: >

Two slots free, or two slots total?

128MB x 8 = 2GB

If your mainboard has 4 slots, and each of those slots can support a 512MB DIMM, you can install 2GB of RAM.

Since you're running Windows ME, I advise you to use 512MB or less RAM.

I completely agree with Arrow ... 512MB or less with WinME. Anything over that, and you'll have to make some changes to the system vcache in order to run the memory without errors ... and WinME memory management is just too inefficient to utilize large amounts of RAM over 512MB, anyway. And if you wanted that much, you'd have to discard the memory modules you are using now.

If you wanted to run a gigabyte of RAM, you'd have to upgrade the operating system to Win2K or WinXP.

There's no way that your mainboard supports 2GB of RAM with only two slots. You'll have to look at the specifications for the board to see how much RAM it can actually support. My guess, (although this depends on the chipset) ... 512MB total.

Note: Don't try and install just any kind of DDR modules ... look up the memory type for the board at:

The Micron you are currently using is a good choice.

I went to crucial and put in my info regarding my system.

I also look in the manual and yes it supporrts up to 2 GB with just two slots. I was suprised myself( but happy suprised)

Well i took the advice here and ordered 2 256 for a total of 512. I'll just keep the other ram for maybe a second PC. I could have saved money if i had more slots : (

Thanks so much to all : >

Very happy to help ... and glad that you got your memory.

Just one comment, Debra.

That has to be a misprint in the manual for your computer.

Reasoning: You have two memory slots. Each can only hold 512MB of RAM. That's 1024MB combined ... or 1GB. There is no such thing as a 1024MB DDR DIMM ... at least, not yet. And that's what you'd have to have in order to run 2GB of memory on that mainboard.

You'll notice that the largest memory module that you could purchase for the system was a 256MB 184-pin module. This might be because your system won't run more than 512MB of RAM without a BIOS update, regardless of the information found in the manual.

I thought it was unusual that you could not purchase a 512MB module ... and this is a possible explanation for the exemption.

I decided to post again because I didn't want you to continue to be confused about the specifications for your system.

Here is a link in case you find that you need online support for the system in the future:

And here is a link to the online manuals for this computer model:

toejam,

Crucial doesn't have 512 sticks, i noticed other sites had them but cruial is reliable so i just bought 2 sticks of 256.

Here's what my manual states for( from your link) it states the same as my hand manual. I will also call Micron and see what they say.(i'm curious)

What do they mean by double sided?

Thanks so much :>

When adding or changing memory, keep in mind that your computer supports the following:
• 184- pin unbuffered DIMMs
• PC1600 — Only for use with 200 MHz FSB processors
• PC2100 — For use with 200 MHz and 266 MHz FSB processors
When both banks are filled with maximum memory, your computer will have 2 GB of DDR
SDRAM. You can install single- or double- sided DIMMs in the following combinations:
Tabl e 3: DIMM Combinations
..... DIMM Size ............ Non- ECC Configuration ............ ECC Configuration
64 MB 8 MB x 64 8 MB x 72
128 MB 16 MB x 64 16 MB x 72

Time for me to eat some pie, the humble kind, that is.

I stand corrected ... there are DDR266 128MX72 CL2.5 ECC REG. DIMM (1GB) modules; I found them at Kingston.

That's what I get for building so few AMD systems ... out of the loop.

Sorry, Debra ... you were right. I'll have a little crow on the side with that pie.

You learn something everyday.

God, I hate for newer technology to sneak up on me! ;-)

******************************************

Double-sided just means that the chips are arranged on both sides of the memory module. Not to be confused with dual-banked, which means the module is divided electrically into two memory banks.

See ya ...
