I have a friend in a different State who is new to computers and would like to get some downloads, many of which are zip files, yet is reluctant to purchase Winzip or any similar utility. I'm running Win98SE, and he has a brand new system with WinXP. I went to a consumer electronics store and played with the computers on display that were running XP to get a feel for the OS, and noticed that XP appears to have a utility that allows you to compress folders. Does XP have a program that can open Zip Fies? If you download a zip file and don't have Winzip or a similar program, will it appear on your hard drive, and if so, would it still be named .zip? Thanks for your help.

XP has native support for zip files, also the trial version of win zip runs forever(i think)

Although it has a lot of good ideas, beer doesn't know anything about computers!!!

XP supports .zip files, and it will be named with the .zip extension. Although it's basic, it gets the job done. But, I like the feel of WinZip much better.

If you do decide to ust WinZip (which does have an infinite trial, with annoying popups), make sure you remove .zip file integration since it's not needed, as I mention here.
