I am trying to understand how WiFi works - I have shaw wireless in my home - does that mean I can connect my blackberry torch using WiFi

You have Shaw Internet - great.
if you have a wireless modem cum router from Shaw, yes you can connect your BB Torch to your home Internet using WiFi,
If you have a simple modem only (without a WiFi router), you would need to buy a Wireless Router in that case.
