670 Sli,680 Sli or 690

Hey, I know there has been other threads about this same question but they are all closed and I had a question I haven't seen other people raise yet.
So starting off here is my build so far, (I haven't bought anything yet so its open to change.) Its no linked with PC part picker ect but in Australia it doesn't have many sites linked to buy from so I just typed up my own list.

I've picked2x GTX 670's 4gb because they are good value for money but I realized that some games don't have multi GPU support, So I could only use one card :/ So I was kinda leaning towards a GTX 690 because of that reason, also they apparently consume less power and have a better performance sooo, I can get them about the same price here. But then I thought, What about 680s?!?!? hm. BUT seeing they are 800$ here for a 4GB version I was like that but 2gbs are only 500 so heres the final question.

2x GTX 670 SLI Or 2x GTX 680 2gb Or 1x GTX 690.

  1. Don't waste your money on 4GB cards for single screen gaming, you only need that for triple screen resolutions, as shown here:
    http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Point_Of_View/GeForce_GTX_680_TGT_Ultra_4_GB/33.html

I'd recommend 2x670 2GB in SLI if you want to save some money or 1x 690 if you want the cooler/quieter option.

Forgot to mention im getting more monitors soon
  3. Don't forget the GTX 690 is a (internal) SLI card.
If game not optimized you'll use half GTX 690

Ah OK, then I'd get a pair of 670 4GB cards if you don't like the 7970/7970 GHz edition (which would be a bit faster and probably cheaper at the expense of more driver problems).

As you said, the 680 4GB is too expensive for too little benefit and I don't think that 2GB vram will last long at triple screen resolutions so I don't like the 690 as an option there.
  5. Well for sheer value for money the 670 SLI...

best performance today nvidia wise... the 680 SLI...

for dreaming of a monster system -- the 690 . Personally if i was you i just say f*** it and get a 690 or two 670 4gb models

Oh ok, well that changes things alot, I'll go with 670 SLI

How does the 690 make a monster system over the other 2? Because you can only go 2-way Quad SLI wouldn't 4-way 670 or 680 be just as good?

But wouldn't that make the GTX 680's more monster system because 2x GTX 690 is pretty much 4x GTX 680 just not as good?

Yeah x4 680's is a bit better then two 690's With 4x680s, you get issues with temps because the cards will be all squished up on one another. So if you were going to go quad-SLI, 2x690 is the way to go.
  10. If you actually were going to do something crazy and impractical like quad-SLI, a pair of 690s would be a better way to go: less noise and lower temps since you could leave space between the cards.

For 4xGTX 680s, there's a 99% chance you'll have all 4 cards sandwiched right up against one another, which is really bad.

    +1
  12. Yeah, I know, both are pretty wasteful though but upon saying that do you think I should change the 2x GTX 670's to a GTX 690 for that sole purpose because when the 690s start getting outdated I wanna be able to get another one and they'll be cheaper by then but I'm assuming if I go with 2x 670 now and want to get 2 more down the track I'm gonna have those space and heats issues you guys just mentioned.

Yeah you could look at it that way

Thats just another reason to make it harder to choose... Damnit. With that in mind which do you think is the better way to go?
  15. But it costs and extra 300$ to get a 690 than 2x670 over here.

I would go with two 670 4gb models then i mean by the time you need more just buy a new card and sell the 670's ;)

sorry i am not trying to make it harder for you to decide i personally would go with x2 670 in sli.
  18. Done! Yay. (Only suggest changing pre-existing part list if absolutely vital)

  19. Nice to see you upgraded that cooler. Pity you stuck with that ugly case, but each to their own. If i was dumping that much into a rig, i would get a better PSU.
  20. Gtx 670 sli is the way to go, delivers the best price/performance in the market :D

Whats wrong with the case :p anyway I went with that psu because someone said the old one I had was bad so I just picked that one at random, any prefernces on one thats better for similar price?
  22. Nothing wrong with the case, im just not a fan of full towers or the grill across the whole front :P As for the PSU i would have thought someone going with such a high end rig would be going for at least a 850. I know most people say to get at least 20% more power than needed as stuff degrades over time and you dont want to be hititng the max draw under load. Im not sure how much that setup needs but I imagine SLI 680s need a bit. As does your cooling solution.
  23. Changed the PSU :) And everyone is saying ripjaws series ram is bad so I went with some sniper. (Looks cooler aswell)

Ok sweet, I know you know what your doing and I trust your right, Anyway is everything else alright in the build, I changed the Ram, Was that a good idea or are they both bad?
  27. Wtf? Everyone is saying that 4gb Asus GTX 670s dont excist but I've got one linked right there..? There are no videos on them and when I asked a guy why there aren't he said that they don't exist. Do they, Are they really new maybe? Because I've got that one listed there but I dunno.
  28. Should I just go with EVGA anyway? EVGA 4gb GTX 670 SC is the same price, If the Asus did exist would this be a better way to go anyway? http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=20507
