So, my dilemma is this.
I need a lens to use with my D70 that will allow me to take shots of
two and three people standing posing, all shaking hands and holding an
award or certificate at about waist height.
The requirement for me is that I be 6-10 feet away while taking the
shot and that I get from the knees to above the head in the photo.
Actually a full body would be nice.

The kit lens should be able to do this, no?

A 35-mm lens will do that in a vertical shot. 28 mm just about in a
horizontal shot. Distance about 3 m in both cases. To get 3 people in
you probably want horizontal. I would go for a 24 mm lens.

And at a great price. From 10 feet away, I can photograph my refrigerator,
stove, sink and dishwasher, with plenty of room to spare to the ceiling and
above, and to the floor and more. To crop three people holding an award
from the knees up I'd have to zoom "in" quite a bit. (I just tried this and
measured the distance from the fridge with a tape measure.) Even better,
the built-in flash should work fine at these distances and focal lengths.
It really is a great lens for the buck. I think people who buy the camera
without the kit lens are missing a real bargain even if you have other
lenses, unless they cover the same area and are AF lenses.

Holding the camera level will be *very* important! And even so you're
the close distance is going to exaggerate anything coming towards the
camera. You'll need to pay attention to posing to make that part work
out.
