I am helping a friend with an older computer. We are trying to upgrade it with some more ram. This computer uses the older simm modules. Right now it has two 16s and two 4s installed. He got some 32s and after we installed them the computer would begin booting. Setup recognized the new ram and there were no error messages. But once we got past the initial start up screens, the computer would just black out and would not boot any farther. You would have to shut it off with the power button. We tried different combinations in different slots but if you had the 32s installed this happened everytime. His BIOS manual says that 32s are acceptable so i am not sure what the problem is? A side note though! He recently upgraded from windows 95 to 98 with an upgrade CD. (not a clean install). Now i know that when you first boot up your Bios will check hardware, ram, ect.. then pass it over to windows. Do you think this is a windows problem or hardware? Any feedback would be great.

If you can try the 32s on another system, you can see if they are duff or not.

You might have to set the memory timing slower, especially Cas Latency. Also check to see whether these are 60ns ro 70ns SIMMs.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

I would check to see what your upgrade ceiling is for RAM. The system may not be able to handle all of what you're trying to install. Update the BIOS if possible. This might be a bug that the manufacturer has dealt with and released a fix for. You said you tried different combinations, but did you try just the 32's by themselves (i.e., 64 meg installed)? Also, can you still get the machine to boot with the original RAM in? It's a possibility that something got messed up during the install. Just a few things to try, hope they help.
