Connecting a desktop wirelessly to a Belkin router

Hello,
I have a desktop computer connected to a modem and a wireless Belkin router. I bought a Belkin Surf&Share wireless USB adapter so that I could move the desktop elsewhere in the house and still connect to the internet. When I disconnect the computer from the router, the wireless light on the router turns red and I can't connect. What am I doing wrong?

what type of internet connection do you have?

is the router's WAN port connected to the modem?
