What's wrong with my computer and Drive Image?

*See my sig for my system specs*

I've been having a problem starting up Drive Image 4.0. I'm running Win2K (back from WinXP for awhile), and I wanted to image it right now, since it's as perfect as I can get it. So, I fire up my floppy disks, reboot, start Drive Image. You know how the hourglass shows up before the window of the 3 options you have? Well, that takes like 7 minutes! It's never taken that long before. I fear my 2nd WD600AB HD is choking it. But, I wouldn't know why. I've just finished a virus scan, and there aren't any.

I've removed and reseated the IDE cable. Still hanging for a long time. I'm stumped, and frightened. I can't take another hardware problem! Someone help me out... :frown:

Okay. I tried running HD Tach, but it won't run because I'm on Windows 2000. "Windows NT support only available in registered version." :frown: What to do???

If its only that progrm I would suggest not to use that program. Strange. It works for me until I do an image, LoL.

Run the drive through the normal apps, try AV, scandisk etc, etc. If its fine with everything except Drive image, I suggest you uninstall it and re-install. Might be a bug. Double check the installation stuff.

If you use the FDDs on reboot, ensure in the FDD config.sys that emm386 is disabled. On a windows generated image the system reboots and emm386 is enabled. Might be that.

Well, I did an antivirus check, a scandisk, ran the IBM Fitness Test, and everything checked out. For the Drive Image floppy disks, emm386.com is REM'd out. So, I'm gonna try it right now...one more time. If it doesn't work, then I'm gonna install Windows 2000 in FAT and see if that works.

Thanks for the help so far, and Happy Thanksgiving!

I think I've singled it out to my second hard drive. Well, after reinstalling Win2K, I tried the Drive Image boot disks again. That hourglass was still going after 5 minutes. So, I'm really suspicious of that new 2nd HD. So, I unplug the IDE cable and electric current, and start up my computer without it. Result: Drive Image starts up normally, which is in I'm guessing 1 minute.

So, I guess my 2nd hard drive might be defective. I don't know. All my data is still there, too! I'm thinking of copying it back to my original 30GB hard drive using PartitionMagic 7.0 Pro. It's about 15.7GB of data I'd have to copy. I was thinking first to burn all my most important stuff to CDs, then just leaving the rest (basically music, that I can redownload again). Then, use the option to shred the complete 2nd hard drive so that if they try anything with it, they can't retrieve any specific data.

Before I send it back to House of Computers, is there any other suggestions? I really don't like to have to go through all this trouble. It's been past the refundable period, but I'm still under limited warranty. Right now, I'm gonna fill out the End-user Registration Form at the Western Digital website. Then, call and try to get some support.

Please help me out...

Any advice? Anything? I'm hangin' right now...

Anyways, I've backed up all my stuff (except my mp3s). I've formatted that 2nd HD, and moved the stuff back to my first hard drive. It's split into 2 partitions. Then, I reinstalled Windows 2000. After disconnecting the WD600AB, Windows starts up fast again, and Drive Image starts normally again.

I keep my situation updated here. Please help me out...

I don't recall if you said or not. Did you change drive positions? If so how about jumpers for master / slave?

Right now, it's set to Dual (Slave). I'm referring to this page: http://www.westerndigital.com/products/drives/wd600ab.html

I'll set it to cable select right now, and see what happens.

Man, that's so weird. Everything's fine now. I tried Drive Image, it started up fine. I enabled the Primary Slave in Windows 2000, and Windows started fast. Dang...how come Dual (Slave) didn't work??? I'd still like to know why. (I gotta update my site saying that it's all good now.)
