What are the rest of your system specifications? Budget? Power supply?

I'll suggest a power supply that would run all of these cards and last you a very long time:

The Earthwatts is beefier, but Seasonic makes some of the best in the business. They are both very good.

My vote would go for the 7870.

Thanks, do you think it would be worth spending the extra cash for a 7950 or would i not see any performance increase?

It depends on the resolution you are playing at and the rest of your build specifications. If you are building a new Intel-based computer (not a fanboy) with like a quick i5 or i7, you would be fine with either. Its your call.

But with the AMD cores, I would only go with a 7870 personally.

7870 is the way to go. Really would tell you to go for the most powerful card you can afford.

but yes.....that 4170 CAN handle the 7950/or 7970 for that matter

If you overclock that 4170 to 5 or 5.2 ghz with sufficient cooling you can pretty much pair it with a 680gtx or an HD7970
