Could someone recommend a good 5.1 dolby set of speakers below 150 dollars. I've been looking at Boston Acoustics, Altecs and love the Klipsh, but can't afford those right now. I have heard most of the CS / Creative ones, but the only ones I like are the dtt 3500 and those are way above my budget right now.
I use the Altec Lansing ADA885's I got for $175 from dell. I looked around for a long time and they are probably the best for sub200 range and not much over your 150 limit.
It depends on what you are looking for though, I use my computer as my cd player/tv/games/dvd everything. I wanted good highs and mids with the lowest bass I could get out of a set of cheap computer speakers (without buying a seperate reciever, speaker set, all that stuff).
The ADA885s have a built in Dolby Digital decoder, come with a remote (also a plus cuz i watch dvds from the bed), the woofer is the largest I've seen on a computer system (8inch). This system hits the 'lowest' bass I've heard on a computer. Klipsch is louder but these hit lower having a larger cone for the woofer.
I think I would have been as just happy with the ADA880s for around 80-100 on pricewatch, they have a little less power, no THX certification (YES the 885s are Certified!) but still have dolby digital decoder built in and a remote. The 880s dont support Quad mode for 4 speaker games though like the 885s but I would save the money and get the 880s if I was to buy again, they still have the nice deep 8inch downfiring sub.
There are also ADA890s available but they are more expensive than the 885s and from what I heard dont have any real benefits worth the money.
I'm a metal fan but I'm listening to p.diddy right now on cd and the sound is fantastic but I also use a sound blaster audigy. check both out on pricewatch and dell if they still carry them (use a discount for business or soemthing) and dont buy refurbed of these items.
good luck.
edit- both are 5.1 systems but both create the center channel virtually by putting that signal to both front speakers. it works well.
Edited by kinney on 11/27/01 01:01 PM.

I was looking at those, but couldn't find them in stores anywhere near here. I am usually picky about my sound (I am a former sound engineer), but this set will just be for my set top DVD player. I take your word though an I might order those online.
Altec's got new speakers and I don't know about it?!!! *running to the corner*
BTW, on one of my final mix test pooters I still use a combination of Altec AS48 and Soundworks together and I have yet to hear better for double or tripple the price.
