If you expirience ATi driver ( Family driver ) stop responding msg like I did you need to know a few things.
1.Almost everyone expirience this either in
-fullscreen mode while gaming ( regardless of how graphic demanding game is )
-when using drivers that are not designed for Win 7 but U want to use them in WIN 7
-overclock your cards
The first 2 do not exclude each other.
Found my ATi card to be X1650. I use this card on this Win 7 machine just til I get back m GFX 660 back from warranty repair. If U are curious I placed it back to Vista machine - NO ISSUES AT ALL...
Then I went to our best friend google and found amd website that offered Catalysator program that is a kind of graphic card program where you can adjust some settings. Now, X1650 was never an advanced card and it doesnt even have fan control chip on it but control of fan speed works both manually and auto in VISTA but NOT in WIN7. But lets go back to this program. While on proper amd directory I found this explanation prior to download :
"AMD has moved a number of DX9 ATI Radeon™ graphics accelerators products to a legacy driver support structure. This change impacts Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Linux distributions." & "AMD may periodically provide Windows XP and Windows Vista driver updates (for the products listed above) for critical fixes only. No new features will be provided in future driver updates."
I do not understand what is legacy support but this clearly indicates that they wont offer any new drivers that can combine my card with Win 7. Strange enough, they never did offer Win7 driver for this card and they state on their website that its basically user responsibility if we choose to use this card and these drivers in WIN 7. So what can I do to fix this issue ?
The best explanation afer many hurs of research and trying to fix things is that
ATI Radeon 9550 Series
ATI Radeon 9600 Series
ATI Radeon 9700 Series
ATI Radeon 9800 Series
ATI Radeon X300 Series
ATI Radeon X550 Series
ATI Radeon X600 Series
ATI Radeon X700 Series
ATI Radeon X800 Series
ATI Radeon X850 Series
ATI Radeon X1050 Series
ATI Radeon X1300 Series
ATI Radeon X1550 Series
ATI Radeon X1600 Series
ATI Radeon X1650 Series
ATI Radeon X1800 Series
ATI Radeon X1900 Series
ATI Radeon Xpress Series
ATI Radeon X1200 Series
ATI Radeon X1250 Series
ATI Radeon X2100 Series
are NOT COMPATIBLE WITH WIN7.
Its actually bad thing to have 6 years old card not working with 3 years old OS. I mean it does work, I have no issues while surfing but once I start playing any fullscreen game, and we are talking here about same games that I have on Vista machine and had no problems runnng them, everything goes black for few seconds and I get msg "Ati Radeon Family driver stop responding and it was succesifully recovered" after I kill gm manually
heres what i did to TRY to resolve issue :
- tried reinstaling catalyst control center program
- tried reinstalling driver trough 7 different versions of this program 3 vista + 4 win (CCC) and also all version manually and in safe mode
- tried searching for bad memory
- tried OS complete reinstall
At this poing am about to give up an u can imagine my reaction to a stupid driver that can cause so much trouble
Finally I resolved issue by manually copying VISTA *.inf driver from the other PC to tis one and problem was solved.
This driver works only with this X1650 card and it wont work if you have any other version of the card but man was this a hussle to fix... My best advice if you get those kind of troubles is to BUY new card since its not worth using time on card that initially cost 50 bucks...
