Thoughts on this system

I don't game. I do video editing, computational heavy programming, and want to start to do gpgpu programming.

I am looking to build my own standalone desktop system. The computer will also be used as a whole house media server, and as such will be based on windows platform, although may dual boot it with linux.

This is what I have thought so far. Do people have any suggestions? The gigabyte motherboard does support xeon processor, so may go that route. I was at one point considering going for a dual socket opteron 6272 solution or dual socket xeon solution, but that basically was too expensive for me.

Some of the parts below are redundant, just because I thought that they were good deals and could use the parts on an old computer, such as one of the SSD drives and the mobo comes with 8gb ram "free," so i can reuse it on an older computer or sell it on ebay. The games come free, so maybe I'll check them out.

More about thoughts system
  1. just build your own, costs way less for the same things pretty much.

if you do not game why add inside games into the build

this build has way to many flaws
  2. When I configure the system on Newegg, there are "free" games that come with the components. It is no cost to me to "buy" these games. They are on the list, because Newegg generates them automatically.

Would you care to elaborate on the problems.

This system is just parts from Newegg. So not sure how I could build this system for less. If you have any recs regarding changing the components for other ones let me know.

    Thanks.
  3. - even the 3930k is a sandy bridge but i still give it the superiority in programming and multitasking.
    - you can get the 7970 as gpu very good gpu specially for its price.
    - samsung 830 series or ocz vertex 4 are much faster than intel 330 SSD.
    - as you going for a quality build , throw this cooler master psu and get seasonic , xfx , or a corsair.
    - why you have 2x8 and then i found another pair 2x4 , you just need 16gb will do just fine.
    - you have a thermal paste and overclockable cpu but you don't have aftermarket cooler , if you want to overclock you must buy one , if not the stock fan have already thermal paste pre-applied but the stock fan cant handle overclocking.

hope to get my point ;)
    have a nice day
  4. Check which of your programs support CUDA or OpenCL, if its OpenCL then take the 7970, if CUDA 670, if neither or both then 7970(just has much more power)

if changing to AMD, get this card and this PSU instead

also sense you are using a Blu ray burner i will be expecting you to be using it a lot, if not swap it down to a $15-$20 Optical drive to install drivers.

Also it is not ideal to have a 410 with something you will use a lot for the 5 1/4 external bays just because you would have to keep opening and closing the panel
