I'm planning on investing a good $1000~ gaming PC that would last me a while and wondering if this is good enough. I've done a lot of research (as much as I could to my knowledge) and came up with this. So here it goes -

CPU - Intel i5 3570K http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504 $219.99

Motherboard - Gigabyte GA Z77X http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128558 (I'm not quite sure if this motherboard is good or not, or if I could get the same bang for a cheaper MOBO) $184.99

Memory - Corsair XMS DDR3 1600 8GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233202 $37.99

Graphics - Gigabye Radeon 7870 2gb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125418 $239.99

PSU - Seasonic 620W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151095 $89.99

Case - Cooler master Storm Enforcer http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119240 $74.99

HDD - 1 TB Seagate 7200 RPM $84.99

Optical drive - Asus CD/DVD burner 19.99

And windows 7 or 8, not sure yet. $99.99

I really hope you guys can guide me in the right direction, I've never really done this before and it's kind of scary. Even when I buy all the items I'm not quite sure how I'm going to fix it. Probably find a local shop. Thanks in advance.

If you're willing to break the bank just a tad, this is a great overall build that will last you quite a while, and allows some room for upgrading and a few nice overclocking features.

I like these tweaks to your original build a lot.

A gaming rig is about having a good graphics card and the 7870 is not the best graphics card you can get for the price. So yeah, this is the build I suggest going for.

+ 4th Generation Haswell i5 4670
+ 7970 > 7950 > 7870 (two tiers improvement in graphics which is most important)
+ XFX 750W PSU (for future crossfire ability)
+ Awesome Asrock Extreme 4 board. It is a nice board.
