Hello all,
For my first PC build I am trying to put together a "mostly" HTPC. I want to go either HDMI or DVI out to an LED TV for video and use the optical out for audio, at least for now.

Approximate Purchase Date: this week

Budget Range: less than $600

System Usage from Most to Least Important: watching movies, , netflix/hulu etc..., internet, gaming

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: new build

Do you need to buy OS: Yes

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: amazon.com

Location: salisbury, nc

Parts Preferences: AMD

Overclocking: probably not

SLI or Crossfire: no

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080

Additional Comments: Case needs to be low profile

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: I want a dedicated PC for streaming media, internet browsing, editing pictures/video/music, and be able to play some games on a 55" LED TV

Here is my parts list:
Case – SilverStone Aluminum/Steel Micro ATX Media Center/HTPC Case ML03B (Black)

PSU – Antec EarthWatts EA-380D Green 380 Watt 80 PLUS BRONZE Power Supply
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002UOR17Y/ref=ox_sc_a...

Motherboard – ASUS M5A88-M AM3+ AMD 880G HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0053YM6QY/ref=ox_sc_a...

Processor – AMD Phenom II X4 965 AM3 3.4Ghz 512KB 45NM 125W 4000MHZ
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002SRQ214/ref=ox_sc_a...

RAM – Kingston Technology HyperX 8 GB (2x4 GB Modules) 1600 MHz DDR3 Dual Channel Kit (PC3 12800) 240-Pin SDRAM KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037TO5C0/ref=ox_sc_a...

HDD – Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache Internal Desktop Hard Drive Bulk/OEM - WD1002FAEX
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0036Q7MV0/ref=ox_sc_a...

DVD/CD - Liteon iHAS324 24X DVD-RW SATA Optical Disk Drive
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002QGDWLK/ref=ox_sc_a...

2x Fan - Cooler Master 80mm Dual Ball Bearing Case Fan Black - (SAF-B82-E1)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009JZSKO/ref=ox_sc_a...

Questions:
First of all, before I buy anything, are all of these components compatible?

Do I have everything covered? Am I forgetting anything?

Will I have to do anything special to get the MB to recognize the optical drive on first boot up so I can install the OS?
It just seems like drivers would need to be installed first so I not sure how that works, I guess.

I mostly just want to double check my parts list and make sure that all of this stuff will work together and I'm not forgetting anything, I guess. Any feedback about anything is appreciated! This is my first build so any extra advice for anything would be good, too! Thanks!

These components are compatible but for that budget I think I would switch it up a bit. You don't need the extra fans I'd go with Trinity:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD A10-5800K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor ($129.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock FM2A75 Pro4-M Micro ATX FM2 Motherboard ($81.97 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($37.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($109.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Silverstone GD06B HTPC Case ($139.98 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: SeaSonic S12II 430W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($70.17 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Lite-On ihes112-04 Blu-Ray Reader, DVD/CD Writer ($54.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $625.08
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

The Trinity APU is more tailor made for onboard graphics as it includes a better onboard GPU than the 965 does. The case I included is Silverstone quality but is one of the better cases on the market.

Thanks for replying!
The ASUS M5A88-M wouldn't be compatible with the Trinity, is it? I'd need to get the MB you suggested in order for to use the A10-5800K, right?

I will need to measure to see if that case will work. It is a bit nicer. The BD/DVD reader is something I will consider as well.

Will the Antec EarthWatts EA-380D give me problems because of the lower wattage or something?

Thanks again.

No you can use the EA-380 with that build and be fine, it's a good supply for the money. The Seasonic one I picked is much higher quality and will handle stronger GPUs should you add one later.

You will need a socket FM2 motherboard for Trinity, the 880 won't work with it. The case is the newer model of the one I have - the GD05B. Silverstone makes excellent HTPC cases.

How does this look?
This brings the total to $548.20 minus shipping and OS. This is probably a little more than I wanted to spend but pretty close!
You're right, it is possible that I will add a low profile graphics card in the future so a better PSU might be in order. Thanks for your input on this!

This is what I ended up going with. Thanks for the suggestions g-unit1111. I'm glad I went with your CPU and motherboard suggestion! I got an email from newegg a few days after I purchased the motherboard stating that it was nominated for Newegg's Customer Choice Award!

I know that your case suggestion is a bit roomier and nicer but everything fit perfectly in the Silverstone ML03B.. I was a little concerned about the BD optical drive and PSU having enough room but there is just enough so it worked out great.

Thanks again!
