I'm helping a friend out on his computer. His Quantum Fireball KA 9.1 gig 7200rpm drive is reading and writing at about 4mb/s. I used Sis SANDRA and Diskspeed, results were consisten. He's running win2k professional with a ntfs partion. One problem I see is that the BIOS reads as UDMA/33 but in win2k it is reading as PIO mode under the device manager. I've seen this hard drive work at faster transfer rates. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you installed the chipset drivers?

In Win2K, in order to enable DMA or UDMA, you have to select this for each channel of the IDE controller, not the device.

That particular hard drive should be able to run at PIO Mode 4/ATA-66. Is it connected to an ATA-66/100, 40 pin, 80 conductor cable? If it is on the correct kind of cable, and the BIOS is not correctly identifying the drive, your friend might need a BIOS upgrade.

Be sure that the blue end of the cable is attached to the mainboard IDE controller.

Note: Always backup the old BIOS before flashing or upgrading to a newer version!
