I'm about to buy a new monitor/tv that has 1920 x 1200 and a GTX 550 Ti but as of right now I have a 15" monitor with max resolution of 1280 x 768. I'm currently using 1024 x 768 with my intel g33/g31 chip...

I've tried fixing the problem via Advanced Display Settings and it's "Hide modes that this monitor can't display" but it's grayed out and I can't click it. It already has no check in it either. I know my Intel G33/31 can DEFINITELY recognize displays way above 1024 x 768 and I used to have a Toshiba 40" Full HD LCD TV w/ 1680 x 1050 that worked fine.. I've updated my drivers just in case that was the problem but there wasn't.

I heard something about the EDID not being able to read all the info it needs from monitors and sending what it has read to the computer. Is there a way to fix something like this?
