Is a hd 5870 still a good gaming card

HD 5870 cards are cheap on ebay. Would they still be suitable for gaming? I have a single monitor at 1680x1050. I really only play Guild Wars and even then I only play occasionally.

Yes its still a good card for gaming, you will beable to play all the latest games with medium settings

Before i got my 7970 i had a 5850, i then crossfired it, it was very good for playing games

I started with one which worked quite well on high settings for most games, then I added a second and I can run pretty much any game on ultra at 60+ fps. I love mine.

The reason I ask is that a friend of mine has two cards a GTX 550 Ti and a HD 5870. He will sell me either one for about the same price.

Take the 5870 any day. I used to have a 5850 a couple months ago and it could handle almost any game on ultra quality 1080p (usually not a lot of AA)

Hah. More like High settings with some AA. It's old, but if you're getting it for less than $150 it's a good deal.

Like everyone else, the 5870 was a monster in it's day. You can mostly point to the "breakthrough" consoles for pushing the boundaries here though. To this day, it's still very relevant and quite capable.

The 5870 will use quite a bit more power, but it should just walk away in many games.
