My laptop had Windows ME, I now have window xp every thing
is working except my dvd-rom. I have a toshiba dvd-rom sd-
c2502. will not read any disk. Toshiba said that there is
no special driver needed for there dvd's. Any help will
be appreciated

You don't need a driver but to play a DVD you do need DVD decoding software.
Reinstall WinDVD or PowerDVD, whichever came with the notebook in the first
place. If you have lost the original CD, www.cyberlink.com or
www.intervideo.com.
