Low End (< $500) Gaming Rig Upgrade

Greetings all,

I have an older AMD gaming rig that I'd like to upgrade to see if I can get squeeze bit more performance out of Planetside 2. I'm looking to re-use as much as possible, but I'm recognizing that my CPU and GPU are a bit long in the teeth. I don't need anything other than CPU / Mobo / Mem / GPU - I already have a good monitor, SSDs for the drives, etc. I'm pretty price sensitive - especially this close to the holidays - so every little bit counts.

Here's what I currently have:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 (Deneb)
Mobo: MSI 870A-G54
Memory: 16 GB DDR3-1333
GPUs: 2x Radeon HD 4850s (Crossfire)

And here's the bits from the template:

Approximate Purchase Date: Within 2 weeks
Budget Range: $500 total out of pocket; prefer lower
System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, 3D Design, Browsing
Are you buying a monitor: No
Parts to Upgrade: CPU, Mobo, GPU (RAM if necessary)
Do you need to buy OS: No
Preferred Website(s) for Parts:
Location: Columbus, OH (near a Microcenter)
Parts Preferences: AMD
Overclocking: Maybe
SLI or Crossfire: Sure
Your Monitor Resolution: 2048x1152

Why Are You Upgrading: Want more than 10 FPS in Planetside 2

  1. sorry i dont really know how to help you hardware wise (im a bit new at this) but i am trying to build a new gaming pc for EXACTLY the reason you are, getting better frames on games, specifically planetside 2. beast game but really hard to run. what i can recommend is a program called Razor Game Booster. its free on razors website. it does what ever other game booster does but i just like this one. it just shuts down all your non essential programs taking up space in the background and focuses your computer 100% on the game. i get 30-40 FPS on planetside with this, running 8 GB of ram, an intel i3, and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 520.

so this can help you run it while you are looking for parts with which to upgrade with.
  2. CPU: FX 8320 - 193$
    GPU: HD 7870 - 220$
You can keep Motherboard and ram because it will fit. Total is 413$. Good luck

And throw in an aftermarket cooler such as the Hyper 212 EVO for extra overclocky goodness!
