Will PCIE2.0 work on a PCIE3.0?

Hey guys im building an IVY BRIDGE CPU w/ Z77 motherboard. Now, the Z77 motherboard comes with 3 PCIE 3.0 sockets.
My question is will the older version (PCIE2.0 x16) work on the new PCIE3.0 x 16?
