Lower than expected fps with hd 7970 in WoW.

In WoW I'm usually hovering around 45fps which I know isn't the right amount for the type of PC I built 2 weeks ago.

I have an hd 7970 (stock)
i5-3570k at 4.2ghz
8gigs of ram
ATX Xtreme z77 motherboard

All top end parts and for some reason I'm not reaching the benchmarked FPS in WoW. The benchmark on this website for WoW at ultra 1920x1080 gets 100+ fps.

Help needed here please, the WoW technical support hasn't provided any support that has fixed the problem.

Here is the dxdiag

MMORPG benchmarks are worthless. There are so many factors which can impact performance that I could write a book about them. Performance in a dungeon with a few players and a few creatures is going to be far better than performance in a city with tons of players. It's just the way MMOs work.

Dezzil, are you running WoW with ultra settings? Specifically, will it let you turn the textures way up? A very common problem with that CPU is that windows only uses 1 core - you have to change this manually.

Oh, just another note, found this out while installing WoW for a friend - because of the way WoW is coded, it doesn't play nicely with overclocking. Have you tried turning the OC off?

The Benchmarks for WOW are run under very specific conditions to prevent massive variations due to large numbers of players moving around in the same area. That is done because WOW is CPU intensive and running the benchmarks in a major city, such as Stormwind or Orgrimmar will bog down the CPU more and cause extreme variations in framerates. Same thing applies to Raids where you can have up to 40 players or battlegrounds which can have even more. In those situations 45 FPS is pretty good. That said, you should be getting very good frame rates in normal play areas. Have you tried turning down AA to 4x or 2x. That will help you get better framerates.

My graphics card is at 75 and my cpu is at 40

My processor is really cool I have around a 30% load with WoW up shouldn't my cpu load be higher in a cpu intensive game?

+1, very true.

That said, in areas outside of cities, what is the OP getting?

Is shadowed turned up to ultra? Shadows in WoW in the past have been real killers on FPS, and at least used to be handled heavily by the CPU. Ultra settings usually means Ultra settings on everything but shadows, which are turned down a couple notches at least.

I have everything set to ultra except shadows - I have that on high.

I have 8x AA and SSAO set at high with no one around I get around 55+ fps in an open zone.

I haven't played WoW since WotLK, so I'm not sure what you should get. Is this Cataclysm, or Pandarian or what ever it's called?

Looking up a benchmark for Pandaria, you may not be getting as bad of FPS as you think.

Keep in mind, as mentioned before, this benchmarks will be done in out of the way locations with no other players around to have the most consistent FPS avoiding outside influences.

Thanks, to bad it doesn't show the HD 7970.. but yeah Pandaria increased lighting and provided higher resolution textures..

I'd suggest using lower AA. 4x is usually plenty, and increase FPS a lot, for most games at least.

You know, this is the second or third post I've seen where peoples high end builds aren't performing in WoW like they would like it to. I think that WoW has some kind of ceiling, where after it has so much GPU power it doesn't know what to do with it anymore so it's just taxing your GPU and CPU harder than it really needs too. I've also heard some people argue in similiar BF3 posts that internet speed can lag up your FPS a bit, if that's true then I would think that would go for Wow too.

Interesting, I just did a 25 man raid and I had a constant 45+ fps the same when I am outside in the open world. I didn't check what my cpu or gpu usage was at but that is really good in big 25 man fights with all the spell effects and what not.

I'm just wondering if my gpu and cpu went up in usage for the raid and how I can keep that when I'm just in the open world. Any tips?

Im not much of a WOW player, but I heard that the servers limit people with higher end gaming rigs to give others better performance...or something along those lines....

Could that have something to do with it?

it's not the servers per se, it's the programming model. The server operates on a common tickrate for all players which means that the client can at best interpret data between successive server updates. If the server gets bogged down then the tickrate will drop down and as it gets progressively bogged down player UDP packets will get dropped so that it can still operate. It will be slow, but it will still work.

Not your hardware, but limit your fps....Just something I heard a while ago, before MOP or Cataclysm... I thought I'd bring it to the table incase anyone else knew anything about it?

I would imagine you should get more fps with that card, It just sounded like a reasonable suggestion as you were not fluctuating between large raids and open world.

They don't limit your actual FPS, but they can limit your apparent FPS by constricting world updates. This can make the framerate seem lower than it really is and if the game isn't coded well it will appear to stutter a lot even at a high actual framerate.

This fps issue is a simple fix. I was having the same problem a while back, only averaging around 40-50fps. For some reason WOW doen't play well with some of the default CCC settings. Open your Catalyst Control Center. Make sure everything is set to application controlled, vert sinc is "always off" and i think there is one more box to uncheck in regard to optimize surfaces or something like that. Once you do that open WOW and set everything to ultra, you should average above 100fps. I am running a reference 7970, oc'd to 1125/1500, i7 3820, 16gb g.skillz at ultra settings and now hardly ever fall below 100fps, sometimes in SW i'll dip to 60-70fps. I actually hit 483fps riding the tram from SW to Ironforge the other day...

I have vertical sync to always off, where is the other box.. I turned off Vertical Sync but I still have the same performance.

This is all in the CCC BTW, if you think I just turned it off in WoW
