What is the difference between ECC Registered and just ECC?

Background:

I am planning on buying a Athlon XP 1900+, Asus A7V266-E motherboard. I am thinking about getting it all from googlegear.com since they seem to have everything I want and I'm trying to figure the memory situation right now. This page: http://www.googlegear.com/ggweb/jsp/ProductList.jsp?ThirdCategoryCode=011104 is what I am looking at. I read the argument for ECC by Fa1c0n and it sounds good, so I want to go with that (this is my development workstation), but do I need ECC registered?

Also, can I just get one 512mb module or is it better to get 2x256mb? Is it just a question of maximum capacity, or is there any performance difference or anything?

Thanks!
