For 120hz/144hz you want this monitor that just recently was released:

120hz will offer a good fluid motion for the desktop or gaming. For gaming you need to maintain 120fps(which means you will require SLI) in games otherwise get a 60hz monitor.

You can always opt for a higher resolution monitor for sharpness and clarity which I think would be a good option.

In gaming 120-144Hz is amazing, the problem is spending $500 on a TN Panel lol. Buy the monitor and down the road like you said go for highend card thats out at the time your shopping. You will notice 120hz everywhere not just gaming.
